The Louis Van Gaal Era

louis van gaal marcos rojo 600x600 Why Louis van Gaal May Be the Wrong Choice for Manchester United

Louis Van Gaal’s “Red Devil Revolution” might have won over the British press quickly but how is he serving as an effective custodian of Manchester United’s future? David Moyes made an effort to transition properly to the next era of Manchester United players giving Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck more time on the pitch and worked to transition the backline.
Friday, it was revealed that Danny Welbeck has been told he is free to leave the club by Van Gaal. If this is the case, Manchester United has given up on one of its best home grown players of the past decade, a player who is good enough to feature regularly for England. Yet Van Gaal using a 3-5-2 formation, which logically would require a striker that can pair with either Robin van Persie or Wayne Rooney, does not see Welbeck in that role. One wonders whom he sees in this role that would be superior to Welbeck.
The decision to anoint Wayne Rooney as captain is another curious decision. Sir Alex Ferguson preferred to have the armband worn by a mature player with leadership skills and the respect of his teammates. In Rooney, Van Gaal has picked a player that openly sulks and has threatened to leave the club on multiple occasions. Rooney’s demonstrative petulance is a trademark of a player that many feel has never completely matured. No doubt exists that he is one of the very finest footballers on the planet when on his game, but his behavior and lack of leadership skills make his selection as captain truly bizarre and perhaps damaging to the manager.
Van Gaal’s insistence on using a 3-5-2 formation has been hailed by some quarters of the British press as “genius.” Yet in the first competitive match under the Dutch manager, United was opened up and torn apart by Swansea. Van Gaal often played a 4-3-3 in his previous club stints but sprung the 3-5-2 on Spain in the World Cup and has stuck with the formation all summer with both the Netherlands and now Manchester United.
But does Manchester United really need to play a 3-5-2? Only time will tell on this, but the quickness with which many in the press declared use of this formation “genius,” when previously Kenny Dalglish, Roberto Mancini, Steve Bruce and Brendan Rodgers were at various times in recent years aggressively critiqued for playing the formation, is telling.
But to play this formation, Van Gaal must upgrade the Red Devils’ defense. This has yet to happen as Marcos Rojo is the only highly-rated defender ready to feature that the club has signed this summer. Luke Shaw, despite a great season at Southampton last year, is more a signing for the future than a likely current stalwart at left back.
Meanwhile in England, Van Gaal has mesmerized large elements of the British press with his caustic press conferences and incredible degree of self-confidence.
Just three years ago Van Gaal was sacked at Bayern, following a disastrous season where Borussia Dortmund featured a number of young stars, an exciting brand of football has overtaken the Bavarian giants. When the Dutchman was sacked, club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated Bayern had “no alternative but to part company with Van Gaal.” Bayern President Uli Hoeness went even further saying “Football should be enjoyable, but there has been nothing enjoyable about football at FC Bayern for a while now.”
No doubt Bayern is a tough place to manage and the club hierarchy tends to be demanding, elitist and snobbish. But Van Gaal failed miserably in Munich just a year after reaching a Champions League final with a side that he largely inherited with the exception of the signing of Arjen Robben.
Given the longevity that Manchester United supporters expect from their managers and the club culture that demands patience and loyalty, it can be strongly argued Van Gaal might be the wrong man for the job.
In time we will know if this was simply a summer of false hope for Manchester United under a well-traveled short-term manager or the start of a new era of greatness. However, what has transpired thus far leads me to believe the former is more likely.

The David Moyes Era

David Moyes
Manchester United manager David Moyes has been sacked, only 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson.
His dismissal was announced  following a meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at the club's training ground.

Moyes, 50, was chosen by Ferguson to succeed him when he retired after 26 years in charge last summer.
United said player-coach Ryan Giggs will take charge "until a permanent appointment can be made".
His first match as interim boss will be the home game against Norwich.
Coaches Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden have also left their posts, but goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and first-team coach Phil Neville will remain with the club for the rest of the season.
United shares, which trade on the New York Stock Exchange, were up more than 6.5 per cent at $18.80, signalling investor relief at the decision to sack Moyes.
On Monday, United had refused to comment on newspaper reports that Moyes, who left Everton to sign a six-year deal with the Premier League champions, would be sacked before the end of the season.

Man Utd's disappointing season

  • Defeated in Champions League quarter-final by Bayern Munich
  • Beaten in League Cup semi-final by Sunderland
  • Lost at home to Swansea in the third round of the FA Cup
  • Five points from a possible 24 against the current Premier League top four of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal
  • Defeat against Everton confirmed club will miss out on Champions League for first time since 1995-96
However, those reports prompted club officials to hold talks with the Scot late on Monday in a move designed to prevent a drawn-out dismissal process.
In a short statement on Tuesday, the club said Moyes had departed, adding it "would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role".
Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal, Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, Atletico Madrid's manager Diego Simeone and Paris St-Germain's Laurent Blanc have been tipped as possible successors.
However, Klopp has ruled himself out of the job, the 46-year-old telling The Guardian: "Man Utd is a great club and I feel very familiar with their wonderful fans. But my commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable."
Former Manchester United and England striker Michael Owen said on Twitter: "Huge news at Old Trafford but with the summer looming and a huge transfer kitty available United had to be 100% Moyes was the right man.
"Evidently they didn't have the confidence in him in which case makes the timing absolutely right. Now the big question is who's next?"
The papers suggest United will make discreet moves to see if Pep Guardiola can be persuaded to leave Bayern Munich.
"I definitely think Ryan will be a manager," said former United captain Bryan Robson. "Whether he gets it full-time at a club like Manchester United is a big ask."
United, who lie seventh in the table with four games remaining, are guaranteed to record their lowest points tally in the Premier League having struggled at Old Trafford in particular this season.
Under Moyes, they have lost six league games at home, been beaten in the FA Cup by Swansea at Old Trafford and were unable to prevent Sunderland defeating them in the Capital One Cup semi-finals.
In March, some supporters chartered a plane to fly overhead during their Premier League game against Aston Villa trailing a banner with the words "Wrong One - Moyes Out", a reference to the banner at Old Trafford that proclaimed Moyes to be the "Chosen One".

The Red Devils will miss out on Champions League football for the first time since 1995 and are in danger of missing out on European competition altogether for the first time since 1990.
United reached the last eight of the Champions League before being knocked out by Bayern Munich and Moyes argued that their best displays had been in the competition.
But the Scot has been dogged by claims he has fallen out with members of his squad.
When midfielder Anderson joined Serie A side Fiorentina on loan in January, he was quoted as saying other United players "wanted out" although he later denied it.

Analysis

The sacking of Moyes was inevitable after Sunday's awful performance at Everton.
A dressing-room source labelled the performance as "lacking desire and passion" and "the basic heart of the team has disappeared". It had seemed for some time the players had stopped trying for Moyes. This confirmed it.
In truth, the Scot has never looked at ease in the job. He was taken aback by the sheer scale of the media interest in United and failed to impress players who own more medals than he can ever hope to amass.
The big problem for United is that, having taken Sir Alex Ferguson's word on the appointment, who do they turn to now?
Rio Ferdinand and Robin van Persie also made less than complimentary comments about his management style, while Javier Hernandez and Wilfried Zaha posted cryptic quotes on Twitter.
At the weekend, Manchester-born striker Danny Welbeck was reported to be considering his future after becoming frustrated at regularly being played out of his favoured position.
Moyes left Everton after 11 seasons saying he could not turn down the opportunity to move to Old Trafford and began his job on 1 July.
However, United endured a difficult summer transfer window and failed in reported bids for Barcelona's Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas.
A double bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines was dismissed as "derisory and insulting" by Moyes's old club Everton, although Fellaini finally joined on transfer deadline day for £27.5m.
Moyes was unhappy United were given a difficult start to the season, playing Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in their first five games.
"I find it hard to believe that's the way the balls came out of the bag, that's for sure," he said.
But his reign began in style with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield at Wembley, followed by a 4-1 win away at Swansea City in the first league game of the season.
However, things quickly got worse with defeats at Anfield and Etihad Stadium, setting the tone for what would become United's worst Premier League season.

With the exception of the additional 21 games Matt Busby (manager from 1945-1969) had in charge as emergency manager following Wilf McGuinness's exit in 1970, and the 22 games when Jimmy Murphy stood in for Busby after the Munich air crash, Moyes's reign represents the third shortest in United history.
It is also the first time since 6 November 1986 that Manchester United have sacked a manager.
The Scot's 51 games in charge exceeds the 43 matches that Walter Crickmer presided over during the first of two spells as manager.
Lal Hilditch was in charge for the shortest time, lasting just 33 games between October 1926 and April 1927.

The Sir Alex Ferguson Era

Sir Alex Ferguson celebrates his landmark games with style through ups and downs. Let's us go through...
He joined the club in 1986, and we look back at the landmark matches during Ferguson's time at Old Trafford.
GAME 1 - Oxford 2 Manchester Utd 0 (November 1986)
It is a measure of how long Ferguson has been in charge that the Manor Ground no longer exists and Oxford have crashed out of the league and come back again.
John Aldridge scored a penalty and Neil Slatter added another in a deserved win for the hosts.

GAME 10 - Manchester Utd 4 Newcastle 1 (January 1987)
Peter Jackson gave the Red Devils a fast start with a flying header - past his own goalkeeper.
Norman Whiteside added a second and though the Magpies pulled one back, Frank Stapleton and Jesper Olsen completed victory in a match notable for Kevin Moran being forced off after swallowing his tongue.

GAME 50 - Manchester Utd 2 Bury 1 (November 1987)
A League Cup fourth-round tie but this was in the days before players were rested. Brian McClair and Norman Whiteside scored in an unconvincing win.
United were knocked out in the next round and despite a second-place finish in the league, Ferguson had already decided major changes were needed.

GAME 100 - Manchester Utd 2 Nottingham Forest 0 (December 1988)
The pre-glory era was in full swing, with Fergie's Fledglings and Ralph Milne, who scored in this game, added to the mix.
Jim Leighton had been installed as keeper, Mark Hughes had been brought back from Barcelona and teenager Lee Sharpe was playing at full-back.
Magic moments: Eric Cantona scores against Nottingham Forest

GAME 250 - Manchester Utd 0 Liverpool 0 (October 1991)
Two trophies already bagged, Peter Schmeichel in goal, United's first title-winning side beginning to take shape, even if there was some nasty pain to experience at the end of this season as Ferguson's team collected one point from four games in eight days to hand the title to Leeds.

GAME 500 - Manchester Utd 2 Manchester City 1 (February 1996)
Now United are on a roll. Title drought over, a double won, the 'Class of 92' about to prove you can win anything with kids and Eric Cantona's ban served. Sharpe on target in this one after the Frenchman had converted a penalty. Another step towards another double.

GAME 750 - Manchester Utd 5 Anderlecht 1 (September 2000)
Andy Cole bags a hat-trick as United begin another European odyssey, their thrilling triumph over Bayern Munich in the Nou Camp and the treble it sealed as well still only 16 months old.
GAME 1,000 - Manchester Utd 2 Lyon 1 (November 2004)
Ferguson's place amongst the managerial greats is already assured, although arguably the best is still to come.
He did not know it at the time but United are heading for a fall.
Twelve months after Ruud van Nistelrooy headed home the winner in this landmark game, they would be out in the group stages, Roy Keane would be sacked and Vodafone would quit as sponsors.

GAME 1,250 - Manchester Utd 1 Everton 0 (January 2009)
Somehow fitting Cristiano Ronaldo, who as much as anyone launched United into their present golden era, should score the only goal from the penalty spot.
United were on their way to completing another hat-trick of titles but they were about to encounter an improving Barcelona team who would go down as one of the greats.

Telecommunication & Networking - Client Server Networks : Disadvantages for the latter.

Disadvantages

1)  Congestion in Network :Too many requests from the clients may lead to congestion, which rarely takes place in P2P network. Overload can lead to breaking-down of servers. In peer-to-peer, the total bandwidth of the network increases as the number of peers increase.

2)  Client-Server architecture is not as robust as a P2P and if the server fails, the whole network goes down. Also, if you are downloading a file from server and it gets abandoned due to some error, download stops altogether. However, if there would have been peers, they would have provided the broken parts of file.

3) Cost : It is very expensive to install and manage this type of computing.

4) You need professional IT people to maintain the servers and other technical details of network.
5) If the server goes down, it takes part or the whole network with it.

6) It is more expensive to install.

7) Needs to be maintaned by staff with high IT skills.

Telecommunication & Networking - Client Server Networks II : Advantages of CSN....

These are several advantages for Client Server Networks..

1)  Centralization : Unlike P2P, where there is no central administration, here in this architecture there is a centralized control. Servers help in administering the whole set-up. Access rights and resource allocation is done by Servers.

2) Proper Management : All the files are stored at the same place. In this way, management of files becomes easy. Also it becomes easier to find files.

3) Back-up and Recovery possible : As all the data is stored on server its easy to make a back-up of it. Also, in case of some break-down if data is lost, it can be recovered easily and efficiently. While in peer computing we have to take back-up at every workstation.

4) Upgradation and Scalability in Client-server set-up : Changes can be made easily by just upgrading the server. Also new resources and systems can be added by making necessary changes in server.

5)  Accessibility : From various platforms in the network, server can be accessed remotely.

6)  As new information is uploaded in database , each workstation need not have its own storage capacities increased (as may be the case in peer-to-peer systems). All the changes are made only in central computer on which server database exists.

7)  Security : Rules defining security and access rights can be defined at the time of set-up of server.

8)  Servers can play different roles for different clients.

Telecommunication & Networking - Client Server Networks I : CSN

Client/server is a program relationship in which one program (the client) requests a service or resource from another program (the server).
Although the client/server model can be used by programs within a single computer, it is a more important concept for networking.  In this case, the client establishes a connection to the server over a local area network (LAN) or wide-area network (WAN), such as the Internet. Once the server has fulfilled the client's request, the connection is terminated. Your Web browser is a client program that has requested a service  from a server; in fact, the service and resource the server provided is the delivery of this Web page.
Computer transactions in which the server fulfills a request made by a client are very common and the client/server model has become one of the central ideas of network computing. Most business applications use the client/server model as does does the Internet's main program, TCP/IP. For example, when you check your bank account from your computer, a client program in your computer forwards a request to a server program at the bank. That program may in turn forward a request to its own client program, which then sends a request to a database server at another bank computer. Once your account balance has been retrieved from the database, it is returned back to the bank data client, which in turn serves it back to the client in your personal computer, which then displays the information to you.
Both client programs and server programs are often part of a larger program or application. Because multiple client programs share the services of the same server program, a special server called a daemon may be activated just to await client requests. In marketing, the client/server was once used to distinguish distributed computing by personal computers (PCs) from the monolithic, centralized computing model used by mainframes. This distinction has largely disappeared, however, as mainframes and their applications have also turned to the client/server model and become part of network computing.

Internet / E-Commerce - Videoconferencing III : Disadvantages..boo

Disadvantages

After my last post about advantages, here are the disadvantages...

 1. Physical Presence

Are virtual meetings a perfect replacement for physical, face-to-face meetings? People communicate non-verbally through gestures such as handshakes, high fives, and fist bumps.  Today, HD video conferencing ensures these cues transmit in high fidelity.  Salespeople can truly read a potential customer’s response, customers can assess a salesperson’s credibility, leaders can gauge their audience to see whether they caught the organization’s vision, and managers determine whether to hire an applicant.  Organizations concerned about physical presence can begin by using video conferencing in the most appropriate applications, such as training and internal meetings, where the gains from video conferencing are dramatically superior to a traditional audio conference call.

2. Quality Systems are Not Free

Some perceive conferencing systems to be expensive, but this is no longer true.  In the early days, organizations installed fully-outfitted central meeting rooms with cameras, lighting and hardware.  Today, high quality video conferencing is possible via cloud-based systems, and the need for expensive end-point hardware has dropped significantly.  Many organizations now install a centralized gateway that connects participants via a broadband network. While this installation does entail some up-front costs, it’s much lower than before, saves on bandwidth, and makes video conferencing much more widely available within an organization.

3. User Familiarity

While some people seamlessly adapt to change, including new technology, others find change disruptive.  Today’s video conferencing systems are significantly easier to use, and some systems (like those available from LifeSize) eliminate intimidating remote controls and multiple devices that were common in the past.  In fact, LifeSize now supports workers’ existing mobile devices (the “bring your own device” or BYOD phenomenon) such as mobile phones and tablets, making the experience far more familiar and accessible than in the past.
See for yourself how cost savings and productivity advantages have made video conferencing a must-have business technology.
